SPEECH

Brainstorming:

How to become a better version of your academic self.
I am going to connect with people by relating to them. I am going to start out by talking about how we all have classes we take and we all take a certain amount. Then say how some people may use a type of organization and then give a few examples of types of organization methods. I will also talk about how I understand it can be easy to get sidetracked by a lot of things and how college life can be very busy.
I will then move on to why I selected this topic. I wanted to talk about this because I am really trying to do well in my academics this year. I will talk about how last year I did not do as well as I wanted to, and then say part of the reason why was because I had no form of organization for my work. And hopefully while making the speech I can encourage others to try and organize their stuff if it is not already. Also maybe give people other ideas and ways to organize their work.
To start off as I said I’m going to just try and connect with the audience and relate to them in a way that will grab them, in this case, it will be about organization. Then I will talk about how college is a lot different than high school and in high school, you could get away with not really organizing the dates you need to know for big assignments and how you were always being reminded of things. Then I am going to move on and talk about how last year I did not organize and really struggled and it even started to affect my grades. Then talk about how this year is going to be different because I have a method of staying organized this year. Then going to share it. Also going to talk about how I am going to utilize the time I have in between classes this year. Last year I always waited until all my classes were over todo my homework so I will be utilizing my time better as well this year.

Outline #1

How to be a better version of your academic self

  • Start off by talking about last year
  • Have always struggled with staying organized
  • Also with finding the right time todo homework
  • This effected my grades and I did not do as well as I would have hoped to
  • This year I had to make a change
  • So I decided I am going to make an organization method for this year
  • Also needed to find a way to manage my time better
  • I created a planner where I will always write down my work due for the next class I have
  • I also am making sure to utalize my time in between classes and prctice
  • I used to wait til the end of the day todo my homework but I am changing that by doing my homework with the free time I have before the end of the day
  • I relized that I would get tired at the end of the day and that would effect my work and the quality of my work
  • So far this year it has really helped with my organization of getting all my work done on time and not forgetting anything
  • Somethings I still need to work on
    • I still forget somethings in my room such as texts books I may need for that day
    • So im going to try to pack my bag the night before my classes
  • Overall it has been going pretty good so far and hope to keep it up

Outline #2

Hi my name is Patrick Stevens and I am a sophomore here, when asked what speech I would be giving today it was an easy pick for me. I am going to talk about how I am improving myself academically this year.

Back in high school I used to have no trouble doing work or anything of the sort. My homework would always be done well and on time, my schedule would always be orgaized and I never really ran into any trouble. I never really saw a grade below a “B” because I never really missed timelines and dates I need to get stuff in by. Another thing I had never struggled with in school was organization, I always had to stuff together and was never forgetting dates or books or anything like that.

When I got to college for my freshman year and thought I could keep doing the same thing that I had in the past during high school. However, that was not the case. The first semester of school was probably the worst academically I have done ever. It was not up to my personal standard, but I still passed all my classes so I did not worry too too much. Then the second semester came and the same thing happened. I did a little better because I had more of a structure due to me being in season. It gave me less time to mess around and I knew what I had todo at all times during the day because my days were so structured. However I still did not do as good as would have hoped to.

Over the summer I did some thinking and decided to needed to change the way I went about my academics. With this I could not just say it and hope everything would fix its self. I had to make steps to better myself. For starters living in a bigger space had a big impact on me staying more organized. Another thing that I decided I was going to do was write down all my homework when it gets assigned. So now I have a google doc sheet and it is organized into each class and what I have the next period we meet up. This has helped me so much because last year I would just guess what I have, rather then actually checking in on what I need and reading the syllabus.

Anoter thing I am striving todo is having better time management. Last year I always waited until the last minute and did not do any work until after practice and classes were done. This year I am utalizng the time in between my classes todo my homework which has done so much for me. I would get burnt out at the end of the day and my work quality would go down tremendously. This year because I have changed it I feel like my work quality has improved and I care more about my work, and my time management is way better as well. At the end of days I feel way less stressed out than I had before.

One last thing I am trying to do is get good sleep. Sleep may be looked over when think about academics but it can  effect a person so much if they are not getting the right amount. It might seem like a simple task, however with juggling everything in my life I found myself being sleep deprived at times during the week and that would effect me towards the end of days. Some ways I have been helping myself with this is setting timers on my phone telling me when I should begin to shut down everything for the night. Although at times it can be a bit of a pain, in the long run it can really help me succeed in every aspect of my life.

One thing I still need to work on is being prepared the day before. I still struggle with remembering things in my room, weather its note books, text books, and papers. I am going to try and plan to make my backpack the night before so I have time to make sure I have everything I need because sometimes I rush in the morning because I try to fit in a bunch of things in the morning which can tend to me leaving small things out like making sure I put a paper in my backpack.

Overall this semester has been off to a really great start and I have been obtaining the goals I have set for myself thus far.

Speech final draft:

  • Back in high school; never below a B and never missed timelines; not organized but did not matter
  • Freshman year of college; thought I could do it; WRONG; worst academically
  • Second semester better but not good; structure due to season
  • Over summer did thinking; have to put into action can not just say it
  • Write it down; *explain planner*;
  • *time management*; time between classes; last year wait til after class and prctice, stressed
  • *sleep*; everyday tasks; found myself behind on sleep last year; been setting timers
  • Things to work on; prepping the night before,

11/3

Overall looking back on the work that we had done and through the runs there was plenty of advice to go around. The most helpful I think I offered to someone was to just remind them to be confident and that they are doing great. Also just telling my fellow peers to just relax there and to try and not stress over it.

Sometimes all someone needs is a bit of reassurance that they are doing really well and that can give someone the boost in confidence they need in order to give that small push. With reminding them to just be confident and this can lead to them relaxing a little. And when they relax a little this could lead to them calming themselves down which will help everything overall.

After I had gone, some things that people talked about for my review was my memorization. It was not where it should have been when I went for my draft. And the big one was the filler words and slimming those down so they do not happen.

The reason one of the peer review comments was focused on reducing your filler words helped was because when reciting my part I really tried and practiced not using them. I think it left an impact on my final product as I really did not use much. Unlike in public speaking where I really could not seem to stop using them because I never really thought about them until after the fact.

———–

After receiving my grade for my Lone Wolf Speech project I found out there were some things that I had missed. I had missed the best advice I had been given and then  as well the best advice I had given to someone else. After I saw my grade I figured I had to do something to boost it and to make sure that this does not happen again. After looking back I think overall I need to do a few things differently.

For starters, I think I need to read the weekly menu more carefully and really take my time and read everything. Not only when I am in class but also go over it myself and write everything down that is due that week. I should also start writing down important dates as well, which could be a day I may need to present on or anything of that magnitude. And with that maybe I could add a whole new section to my planner where I could add the important date section. I think that could really go a long way when it comes to planning.

Another thing that I could maybe do is make sure I pay a bit more attention in class. Sometimes if I zone out I could miss something. Sometimes we make pivots in class and I could miss something. And if I am not paying good enough attention I could miss something and maybe from there miss a date or something that we do in class that we may need to use for homework. Another thing that I could do is check the weekly menu every day. I think this could be a good habit to get into because I would stay on track and never forget that I have to check something for this class. The way I could enforce it was by leaving the tab open constantly so it is always there for me to be reminded of. My other idea is to make a folder with all my class syllabuses in it and leave the folder constantly up so I see the folder and not only be reminded of this class work but also all my other classes work that may be due for the next few days so I do not forget it is there. Also in case I forget to write something down I would still have that reminder to check and see the work just in case.

Overall, I think I have my situation figured out and I hope it was just a one time thing and should be back on track.
